Organic Spearmint Essential Oil

Spearmint is well known because of its sweet minty smell and pleasant taste. The spearmint herb gets its name from its characteristic spear-shaped leaves.

The essential oil originates from the perennial plant that hails from Europe and Asia but now commonly grows on five continents around the world. It is extracted from the top part of the flowers of the Spearmint plant, scientifically known as Mentha Spicata, through the process of steam distillation. The fresh leaves and stems of the spearmint plant are steam distilled to bring out the sweet, minty aroma. This oil is often used in aromatherapy to help relieve fatigue, headaches and nervousness, and bring about feelings of well-being.

Profile

The perfumery note of this essential oil is warm, spicy-herbaceous, minty. Spearmint oil is generally considered to be less intense than peppermint oil. Menthol has an aroma similar to peppermint. However, unlike peppermint, spearmint leaves have a negligible menthol content. The main chemical component of Spearmint is carvone, that is known for its ability to uplift mood and provide an energizing boost.

And if you find the distinct menthol taste overpowering, Spearmint is a milder alternative to other mint essential oils. Spearmint oil can be used in place of peppermint oil, the therapeutic benefits are somewhat the same.

  • I make a mean mint tea by combining 1/2 black tea and 1/2 green tea and I add a few drops of lemon oil and 1 drop of spearmint oil (per litre). This is after the tea cools down. I usually add extra spring/distilled room temperature water to taste to make a litre of mild tea. Then I sweeten with honey (honey acts as a dispersant for the oils). If you drink your tea unsweetened then add just a few drops of honey to disperse the oil throughout your tea blend. I refrigerate it and drink this as iced tea. Very refreshing.
